Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS) is an independent, co-educational K–12 school. We are one of the few dedicated special education schools in British Columbia, serving students not only from the North Shore but also from across the Lower Mainland.
KGMS follows the BC Ministry of Education curriculum, while adapting and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Our approach incorporates Inquiry-Based and Experiential Learning, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Social-Emotional Education to deliver a comprehensive and student-centred educational experience.
Students at KGMS learn in dynamic classroom settings that include whole-class instruction and small-group work. A key component of our program is our tutoring program for students in Grades 1 – 8, which plays an integral role in supporting our students’ academic success. Students receive one block of one-on-one tutoring each day from a trained therapeutic tutor. High school students in Grades 9 to 12 receive tutoring based on individual needs, as determined by their IEP team.
Tutors at KGMS provide Orton-Gillingham instruction or other programming to students across a range of grade levels. Our therapeutic tutoring faculty are expected to be flexible and responsive to the needs of our diverse learners. In addition to OG literacy and numeracy instruction, tutoring may also include support in social-emotional learning, executive functioning skills, mathematics, and curricular reinforcement. Individualized programming is based on psychoeducational assessment recommendations, KGMS intake assessments, and consultation with each student’s educational team.
