Position: Music Teacher Middle to Senior School (Grades 6-12)

Start Date:  January 13, 2025

Urban Academy invites dedicated, team-oriented teachers to apply for our Grade 6-12 Music Teacher position. Please indicate recent professional development and extracurricular experience you possess as part of your candidacy for this position.

Faculty are required to support the school’s full program including extracurriculars in the areas of athletics, interest-based and academic clubs. Faculty are expected to attend and engage in collaborative staff meetings and to serve on committees if required.

Responsibilities will include:

-Demonstrate commitment to culturally sustaining teaching practices: infuse diverse voices and perspectives in planning and delivery of learning experiences, including Indigenous, local, and global world views.
-Build a strong rapport with students and support the students’ social and emotional development
-Demonstrate commitment to incorporating real-world connections, and 21st-century skills into the music classroom
-Collaborate with colleagues to align planning, instruction, and assessment focused on BC Arts Education curriculum (Music)
-Make relevant and innovative use of multiple technologies in the classroom, to enhance teaching and learning
-Teach for understanding utilizing competency-based assessment and instruction as well as strong formative and summative assessment strategies
-Maintain effective ongoing documentation of student learning to provide ongoing and clear feedback to students and their parents
-Participate actively in collaborative team meetings and professional development and training programs 
-Contribute to the extra-curricular program in the school
-Provide supervision for students during recess, lunch, and after school, and occasional class coverage, as assigned 
-Communicate consistently and professionally with students, parents, faculty and other stakeholders about student needs and growth
-Practice professionalism through ongoing professional development, reflection, and continuous improvement

 

As a strong performing arts school, many students are involved in a range of music and band opportunities. The ideal candidate would also have:

-Commitment to organizing afternoon and evening performances for our community.  
-Technical knowledge of soundboard and microphones
-A desire to co-plan and co-teach in our Grade 6-9 program 
-Experience supporting diverse ensembles and groups including the Wind ——Ensemble, Instrumental Music Bands in Grades 6-9, Show Choir and Musical Theatre
-Experience conducting and rehearsing a Concert Band ranging from beginners to ensembles that play level 3.0

Important note related to this role: 

Instrumental Music Classes and Ensemble are in an X-block from 7:45-8:45am this school year. The Music teacher is on a varied schedule (early start, early end some days). 

Qualifications and requirements:

-Valid BC Teaching Certificate, or the ability to obtain one. Please indicate your TRB # on your application  (L or J followed by 6 digits) 
-Demonstrated knowledge of music theory 
-Undergraduate Degree in Music or successful teaching experience in Music is desired
-Knowledge of pedagogical trends through continued reading and relevant recent professional development  
-Strong classroom management abilities
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
-Superior EQ skills in self-awareness, self-management, social agility, impact and influence 
-Strong knowledge of educational IT applications
