Position Reports to: Middle and Senior School Principal
Works Closely With: Principal, Middle/Senior School; Principal, Junior School; Director of Student Resource Center
Teams & Committees: Senior School Leadership Team; Junior School Leadership Team
Compensation Salary Range $26,516 – 42,772 based on experience experience
Position Overview:
Aspengrove School, a JK-12 Independent University Preparation School, is inviting applications from passionate, enthusiastic individuals for the role of School Counsellor. Aspengrove is entering its 3rd decade as an independent school and has identified Exceptional Experiences as a pillar of its Next Steps Strategic Plan. This position will support the vision of the school by expanding and establishing programs that will add vitality, engagement, and belonging to the Aspengrove community.
The appointed person will work collaboratively with the Principal of the Middle/Senior School, the Junior School Principal and the Director of the Student Resource Centre to define, develop, and lead our counseling program at Aspengrove. The counsellor will liaise with staff and faculty, develop a referral system, work with students and families (in support of the student), and provide wellness programming as required.
Roles and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include:
- Provide individual and group counselling for students in K-12
- Consult and problem-solve with school-based teams
- Work collaboratively with teachers, students, families and outside agencies to develop personalized student support plans
- Lead and/or support general wellness initiatives
- Share information with colleagues and parents in the area of youth mental health
- Occasionally deliver small-group and large-group lessons related to social and individual development
- Adhere to the ethical standard of counselling programs in accordance to the law
- Be available outside the normal school day to respond to emergencies and critical incidents as necessary
Required Knowledge and Skills
The qualities of the successful candidate include:
- Experience counselling in a school-based setting
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Confidence in referring to external community resources
- Experience with small-group and large-group instruction
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Expertise on best practice for privacy and confidentiality with regards to record keeping and consent
Experience and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in school counselling and/or counselling psychology
- A member of (or ability to register with) a professional association (ie. BCACC, CCPA or BCASW)
- Minimum 3 years of counselling experience which includes children and youth
- Canadian resident and legally entitled to work in Canada
Criminal Record Check
Must pass and maintain a clear criminal record check for the purposes of working with children
