The Position:
We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative music educator to fill the role of Senior School Choir Teacher for our Grade 9 – 12 music program at SMUS. The successful candidate must demonstrate superior teaching abilities, outstanding musical skills, and the ability to inspire our students to develop their music potential while engaging in large ensemble singing. Music educators who bring a broad range of experiences and qualifications are our preference.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and deliver engaging instruction in choral singing and related musical concepts, within both small-group settings and large ensemble rehearsals.
Prepare students for a range of performances throughout the school year, including concerts and special events.
Collaborate with fellow music educators (band and strings) to support interdisciplinary performances and co-produce student concerts.
Serve as the choral and/or music director for the annual high school musical, working closely with a creative team of faculty from the Performing Arts department.
Work cross-departmentally to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices with school-wide goals.
Communicate regularly and professionally with students, colleagues, and families, fostering strong and supportive relationships.
Embrace and implement a standards-based approach to teaching and assessment, focused on deep understanding and meaningful learning outcomes.
Maintain consistent, ongoing assessment of student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback to students and their families.
The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interests:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree, preferably with a specialization in music, and expertise in music education, specifically choral music.
Eligible for, or holder of a current BC teaching certificate.
Experience working with and building high functioning choirs while teaching senior-level music in a school setting.
Strong piano skills and the ability to accompany choirs and individual singers while conducting.
Knowledge and experience of diverse and developmentally appropriate choral repertoire relevant to high school choral teaching.
Experience as a music director for musical theatre productions.
Experience with vocal coaching for individual singers with diverse skill levels.
The ability to create a culture of singing for choir students of various backgrounds and experience levels, creating engaging and well-paced lessons that include musical learning alongside the rehearsal of concert repertoire.
Experience with collaborative curriculum planning and assessment with a team of choral and instrumental music teachers across a K to 12 music program.
Experience using Google Classroom and other technology to support learning.
Growth mindset and ability to offer and receive professional feedback.
Evidence of innovative and inspiring teaching practices and assessment.
Familiarity with the BC Curriculum and Independent School experience is an asset.

Salary:
Annual salary range: $74,040 – $119,832.
Criminal Record Check:
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
