Primary Core Teacher 

Junior School – Two Positions Available 

Permanent, Full-Time, starting September 1, 2025

The Position: 

The Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5) is a dynamic and joyful community of learners who create a culture of excellence, think critically and creatively, and are nurtured through supportive relationships in order to reach each child’s potential. Our teaching practice is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, project and inquiry-based learning, brain research and the Virtues Project. 

We are currently seeking a Primary Division Core Teacher to become part of our highly engaged, progressive, and professional faculty, who will fully embrace the SMUS vision and mission and share our educational philosophy and image of the child. 

 

Responsibilities include: 

Teaching students at the Junior School level. 
Working collaboratively with multiple departments on curriculum, instruction and assessment. 
Consistent and professional communication with students, faculty and parents. 
A commitment to teaching for understanding using a standards-based assessment model. 
Maintaining effective ongoing assessment of student learning in order to provide clear feedback to students and their parents. 
Liaising with teaching faculty, parents and administration as an advocate for students. 
Practicing professionalism through ongoing professional development, reflection and continuous improvement. 
Strong classroom management skills that foster engagement. 
A demonstrated ability to integrate technology to transform learning. 
A commitment to and involvement in co-curricular activities. 

 

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest: 

A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. 
Eligible for, or holder of a current BC teaching certificate. 
Minimum 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience in elementary education. 
Familiarity with the BC Curriculum and Independent School experience is an asset. 
An understanding of the developmental needs of early learners. 
A strong background in literacy and numeracy. 
Experience with interdisciplinary, inquiry and project-based learning. 
An understanding of current best differentiation practices and commitment to the needs of all learners. 
Growth mindset and ability to offer and receive professional feedback. 
Strong collaborative skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. 
A proven ability to communicate effectively with parents and colleagues along with demonstrated leadership. 
An understanding of the teaching of social emotional skills and character education. 
A solid understanding of the philosophy of a Reggio-inspired approach.  
Experience using documentation to make learning visible. 
A demonstrated ability to foster innovation and creativity to enhance learning. 
Demonstrated professionalism and excellent communication skills. 
Flexibility, accountability, and integrity. 
Excellent organizational and time management skills. 
Commitment to pastoral care and to delivering high quality education through a holistic lens. 

 

Salary: 

Annual salary Range: $71,536 – $115,780. 

 

Criminal Record Check: 

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
