The first three rounds of the British Columbia Secondary Schools Rugby Union AAA Provincial Championship went exactly to script for Shawnigan. In each encounter, the 1st XV flexed their collective muscle, overpowering challenges from Elgin Park, West Vancouver and Earl Marriott. These victories paved their way to a dream final, with Shawnigan's old rivals from St. George's the final impediment on the road to a 5th consecutive title. The black and gold entered the match the underdog, having lost twice to St. George's during the season, including the final of the Provincial Sevens Championship. Could the Vancouver powerhouse continue their mastery of the 1st XV, or would there be a different ending this time around?
For more than an hour, the game hung in the balance. A quick 10 point lead to Shawnigan was slowly eaten away by St. George's, and as time ticked away in the second half the team found themselves clinging to a 17-12 lead. Sensing their time was running out, St. George's threw everything they had at a staunch Shawnigan defence, with wave after wave of attacks turned away by desperate tackles. As the final seconds were elapsing, a dive for the goal line was rebuffed, leading to a Shawnigan line out, and then the final whistle. The "Drive for Five" was complete!
As the team collapsed into each other's arms in celebration, the weight of expectation turned into the joy of a job well done. Congratulations to the boys and their coaches on a truly momentous achievement!
