Mulgrave Grad Selected as an Egleston Scholar at Columbia

Mulgrave Grad Selected as an Egleston Scholar at Columbia

May 30, 2014

On May 28, 2014, the Mulgrave community celebrated Carlos M.’s achievements by awarding him the Outstanding Achievement in Academics award presented to male and female students who have achieved a high academic standing, as well as the Mulgrave Subject Award for his outstanding work in IB Physics 12. But that was only one piece of a larger puzzle. Early in the spring, Carlos received notice from Columbia University that he was selected as an Egleston Scholar, Columbia Engineering’s most prestigious academic designation for undergraduate students.

“We consider you one of the most talented students admitted to the Class of 2018… and know you will make your own important scientific and extracurricular contributions to Columbia as you join this elite group of students in the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program.” - Mary C. Boyce, Dean of Engineering

As part of this designation, Carlos will have the opportunity to work with some of Columbia’s faculty greats, attend specialised leadership training, workshops, and apply for civic engineering projects, entrepreneurial projects, global experiences and internships. Additionally, Carlos will receive a $10,000 stipend for academic and professional development projects.

Not long after receiving the letter from Columbia University, Carlos received more fantastic news. He was accepted into TRIUMF’s high school fellowship programme. This prestigious fellowship is designed to motivate graduating students with a passionate interest in science to pursue a career in the sciences, especially physics, by offering them the opportunity to experience a real life research environment. As part of this fellowship, Carlos will receive a $3000 monetary cash prize and a six-week summer research experience at TRIUMF.

It is without a doubt that we are extremely proud and ecstatic that Carlos has earned these various opportunities to learn from some of the leaders in the world of physics, science and engineering. Here’s what Carlos’ teacher had to say.

“Carlos is a remarkable and well-rounded young man. He has an endless curiosity for Physics. Whilst one of his main interests is in the new recent discoveries of Physics, including quantum physics and astrophysics, he is able to balance the more traditional theories and see their importance in what we understand today. Not only is he able to understand and explain high level scientific and mathematical concepts, he is also a strong public speaker and linguist. Carlos’ academic potential is one of the highest I have ever experienced at Mulgrave.” - Kathryn Clark, Physics

Congratulations Carlos on all your achievements! We wish you every success with your future pursuits!
