POSITION DESCRIPTION: 
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (PERMANENT, PART-TIME)

We are currently inviting applications for the part-time position of a Lab Technician. This is a part-time position working approximately 9 – 12 hours per week, flexible days and times from September to June with continuing but fewer hour of work during the summer.

The Science Laboratory Technician assists the biology teachers in the design and implementation of labs in a safe, organized and well-prepared learning environment.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist the biology teachers with the design and implementation of laboratory exercises
• Prepare, test, and evaluate the appropriateness of laboratory exercises for different grade levels
• Handle and prepare solutions, store and dispose of chemicals adhering to appropriate WHMIS requirements
• Feed and look after animals (fish, reptiles, mammals, insects and amphibians)
• Water and maintain several plants
• Check inventory, order and receive equipment and supplies.
• Drive small distances to pick up miscellaneous items

Qualifications:

• Science background with minimum first year chemistry and biology courses.
• Experience working in a lab and handling, storing, disposing of chemicals and making solutions.
• Knowledge of WHMIS an asset.
• Must have own reliable vehicle, although minimal driving is required.  Kilometers put on own vehicle are reimbursed.
• Must be comfortable in a high school environment, some work with students is required.
• Good organizational and communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with anyone
• Dependable and hard-working - someone who does what it takes to get the job done
