Our School
St. Michaels University School is an independent, not-for-profit, co-educational day (Grades K–12) and boarding (Grades 8–12) school. There are approximately 1,000 students, one quarter of whom are senior Boarders; the balance are day students across Junior, Middle and Senior schools. We are seeking a senior leader who believes in independent school education and who can nurture existing relationships as well as build new ones, all to advance the Mission and Vision of St. Michaels University School.  You will work comfortably alongside colleagues on the Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Head of School.  Your personality, experience and inspiring leadership will help to ensure that SMUS is well positioned for the exciting demands to flow from the next Strategic Plan to be developed in 2019 and published in January 2020. Our new Head of School, Mark Turner, and the Board of Governors are about to embark on a highly consultative strategic planning process, involving the whole community.  Inevitably this will translate in to a clear outline of the funding necessary for the future sustainability and competitiveness of this school.  You would play a key role in delivering that funding through an engaged community of supporters. You will lead an existing department of Advancement professionals, building on the fundraising successes of recent years.   We seek an individual who has a global perspective with experience in Canada and abroad, and is familiar with different countries and cultures; you will act as a key ambassador at home and abroad for this internationally renowned school.

Director of Advancement
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Advancement is a key part of the Senior Leadership Team, and will also serve on the Advancement Committee of the School’s Board of Governors.               St. Michaels University School is seeking a seasoned fundraising professional whose leadership, previous experience and communications skills will move the organization’s fundraising capacity to ever higher levels.  This full-time position is located in Victoria, British Columbia and is available immediately; while the starting date is flexible for the right candidate, there is a preference for an early 2019 start.
Over the past 15 years the school has built $50 million worth of buildings, and grown its endowment from $2,000,000 to $15,000,000.  Last year the school raised, through donations, $2.7 million for a variety of projects; donor participation and engagement levels continue to rise and a highlight of the year was the opening of the magnificent new Sun Centre, financed largely by donations.  The targets for fundraising moving forward will be considerably more ambitious, driven by the new Strategic Plan currently under development.
SMUS requires a highly experienced fundraising professional, who is able to strategically chart a plan forward that will increase the culture of philanthropy across all constituents in the school community (Alumni, Current Parents, Staff & Faculty.)  This professional will also have a University Degree and ideally their CFRE or ACFRE accreditation; they will also be able to develop and execute effective policies and procedures to ensure the smooth running of the Advancement Department, including the professional and strategic execution of key school events. 
They will be experienced with campaign development and management, including Major Gifts, Capital, Annual, Alumni engagement, Endowment and Planned Giving.  They will work seamlessly and collaboratively with staff, key stakeholders and Board members to ensure the Advancement Plan is firmly grounded in executing the goals of the new Strategic Plan 2020-2025.  In particular the Director of Advancement will strengthen the school’s ability to engage and motivate Board members, alumni and donors in support of the school Mission and Vision.
The successful candidate will lead an existing Advancement Department, comprising administrative & database personnel, as well as Alumni Relations, Annual Appeal and Major Gift staff.  A track record of successfully leading major fundraising campaigns, managing a team, and previous Communications and Marketing experience will be viewed very favourably by the Search Committee.  The Director of Advancement must demonstrate superlative written and communications skills, and have a working knowledge of relational database software and records management.
The new Director of Advancement will model excellence in all aspects of their role, and will interact and successfully communicate with all ages, positions and demographics in our school community; they will be socially adept and able to multi-task, and will act as a key ambassador for the school. The Director of Advancement will mentor and motivate the Advancement staff while connecting across the entire breadth of the school community.            
There is an expectation that the Director of Advancement will become deeply engaged in the life of the school, as well as balancing a travel schedule nationally and internationally. This senior position is complex and demanding, but will be highly rewarding for the right person.
