Director of Admissions
The Director of Admissions is responsible for the recruitment, selection, and enrolment of a diverse group of mission-appropriate students. The Director reports to the Head of School, oversees a team of eight and is a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team. The Director works cooperatively with the Head of School, faculty, staff and the Board of Governors in setting direction and policy to ensure that all enrolled students support SMUS’s Vision and Mission and aspire to be successful in their education and life after graduation.
Global Areas of Responsibility
Responsible for filling the school with mission-appropriate students, through all processes related to domestic and global recruitment. These may include: school visits; parent and student meetings; domestic and international travel; application review; testing; managing both offered and wait pool candidates and inspiring faculty and staff to be customer service and retention oriented
Develops and implements short and long-term strategies to meet enrolment priorities with mission-appropriate students
Leads and manages the Admissions team of eight by providing vision, objectives and expectations of work performance that support the Admissions office and its activities in meeting defined goals of the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools (both day and boarding students)
Develop and maintain the Enrolment Management Plan
Manage and administer the Financial Assistance and Scholarship programs with the Head of School
Manage international agent relationships
Provides regular reports to Senior Leadership Team, the Board of Governors, faculty and staff on the results of admissions activities
At the Head of School’s request, reports on enrolment once a year to the Board of Governors
Initiates research studies/projects, which aid in understanding the market and the effects and outcomes of admissions and financial assistance policies and practices; assessing results and seeking feedback from families in the application process on a regular basis
Works collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Communications to design marketing plans, to create events and to develop admissions publications and programs that are consistent with the overall strategy of SMUS, to promote the school’s reputation via word of mouth
Works in close coordination with the Business Office to prepare and manage the departmental budget, to monitor all expenditures, to track admissions and retention revenue and to administer the Financial Assistance Program
Works with Alumni Relations and Advancement Office to promote fuller understanding of admissions and financial assistance policies and issues within alumni body; meeting as needed with donors interested in supporting financial assistance and scholarship programs
Acts as a positive role model and participates in the day to day leadership of the school by being visible, engaged and an effective presence
Part of the Senior Leadership Team, to discuss and resolve routine school matters, as well as more wide-ranging school issues
Plays a significant role, along with the Head of School, Governors and Senior Leadership Team in shaping the school’s strategic plan, setting high expectations and maintaining a clear focus on student wellness and achievement
Represents SMUS at various external organizations and associations.
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in Education or Marketing and Communications
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in admissions, ideally in an independent school setting
Prior leadership experience an asset
An understanding of independent school culture
Experience of communications and marketing techniques and best practices
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as a proven ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels
Extensive experience with social media tools and techniques
Ability to both lead and execute strategically
Outstanding judgment, a good sense of humour and a high level of energy, creativity and flexibility.
Criminal Record Check
The successful candidate must pass and maintain a clear criminal record check for the purposes of working with children.
