Queen Margaret's School is accepting applications for a dynamic and impactful Deputy Head, External Affairs to join our school beginning August 1, 2019.
This new position requires an innovative, growth-oriented mindset and demonstrated skills in leadership and strategic thinking. The Deputy Head, External Affairs, takes ownership for the creation, implementation, and success of comprehensive external relations program which includes fundraising and development, enrolment management, marketing and communications, alumni relations, and community outreach to support the School's strategic priorities. This senior level position plays an essential central role in building relationships within QMS and the broader community. As a member the School Leadership Team, the Deputy Head, External Relations will have an opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated professional learning community that appreciates creativity and fresh ideas.

  • Actively promote and apply the School's mission, vision and values through implementation of effective external relations strategies to enhance the School's image and position both domestically and globally
  • Oversee and manage the integration of all external affairs programs including, but not limited to, all aspects of
  • The School's Strategic Enrolment Management Plan, securing full enrolment
  • The School's Strategic Advancement Plan, securing the resources needed to grow the School's programming and capital projects
  • A comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program to maintain and enhance the School's image and position within the marketplace
  • A community outreach strategy that builds internal and external relationships and an optimistic and positive school culture
  • Gather, analyze and report on the ongoing effectiveness of the School's enrolment and advancement initiatives
  • Lead the External Affairs team, ensuring excellence in the day-to-day operations that align with the outcomes of the QMS Strategic Plan
  • Develop and manage the annual External Affairs operating budget and ensure fiscal responsibility
  • Foster an understanding of philanthropy throughout the organization

The following are requirements for this position:

  • Master's Degree in Business, Educational Leadership, or other related discipline
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered


  • Proven understanding of institutional advancement work with experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and growing fundraising programs
  • A track record of personally cultivating and soliciting major gifts
  • Working knowledge of enrolment management roles in both domestic and international markets
  • Experience mentoring and managing a high-performance staff
  • Experience dealing with sensitive and confidential issues
  • International work experience

  • Decision-making based on research, analysis, and sound judgment

Working Conditions

  • Travel (domestic and international) will be required
  • Attendance at school and community events outside of regular work day will be required
